Captain James “Jim” Thomas Barnes of Hearne, Texas, was born on September 12, 1944, in Bradenton, Florida.

James lived in many places including Florida and Arizona before planting his roots in Texas to be near his children and grandchildren.

James was a proud Army veteran. He attended the Honorary Military School, Allen Academy. He went on to serve as a Cavalry officer and tanker for ten years; earning the Silver Star Award and the Bronze Star Medal for Valor. After his time in the military, he went on to be a businessman who managed multiple companies before retiring.

James was nurturing and loving at heart. He was proud to be a father and grandfather. He was always caring towards others and would give anything to take care of his friends and family. As a child and young adult, he spent time being a cowboy and riding his horses. He continued to share those stories with his loved ones as life went on. In his later years, his favorite things to do were hanging with his dogs, watching military action movies with his family, going on late night ice cream runs, and spending time with his children, grandchildren and his best buds Lani and Kae-Kae.

James is preceded in death by his mother and father Erie and Bobby “Cowboy” Barnes and his brother Steve Barnes.

He is survived by his sisters: Janis Berry, Jane Mathis and her husband Rick, Cindy Gamez and her husband Joe, and Robin Weber and her husband Larry. He leaves to cherish his precious memories his sons: Jim Barnes and his wife Jill, Christopher Barnes and his wife Kerrie, and Michael Barnes. Along with his grandchildren: Alyssa Barnes-Reynolds and her husband Anthony, Michael Barnes and his wife Payton, Marin Barnes and Tatum Barnes. Lastly, he leaves behind his great-grandchildren Ashanti, Alikai and Aura Reynolds.

James’ memory will remain in the hearts of his family, friends and, all those who were honored to have the privilege of knowing him. His legacy will live on for generations to come.
